May. 17th, 2009 @ 01:02 pm London....
So i'm off to London today for a week long Exchange 2007 course....exciting stuff, not.

Staying at a hotel just over the road from Kings cross station, so hopefully the noise won't be so loud i need a bottle of scotch a night to sleep.

On the pluss side the is a little independant conema nearby whic is showing "Let the right one in" so i might catch that whilst i'm there.

Other than that i'll probably spend most of the time at the course or the hotel. I'm usually too shy to go out to pubs on my todd! I really need to get over my fears in that respect, i'm getting to old for it.

Gonna miss Nic so much!!

Oh, and for those who may not have picked it up from facebook, we got engaged a couple of months back!!

After giving it a fair crack of the whip, I’ve decided I don’t like the new metallica album. Its not that the songs are overly bad, in fact some of them should be really great songs. Unfortunately they all seem to have been pointlessly lengthened (IMO) with solo’s that are not of the standard you would expect from Metallica. Most of the songs seem to be missing the beautiful melodic solos that I associate with the classic Metallica tracks, in favour of a heavier, less refined sound.

I read an interview in kerrang a few weeks ago where they (Metallica) stated we could not have made a better album. If that is the case then... for me, it's time they stopped.

So far this week work has been pretty quiet, I think its the calm before the storm. As of next week I will begin getting kit together for our annual user conference. Apparently it is going to be responsibility in its entirety even though I have never even attended one of these things, let alone set kit up for them.

Anyway its only 13 pcs in seven different languages!!!!!

Does anyone know anything about headphones, the in-ear type? I have a set of Sony fontopia phones which I am pretty happy with but they are getting old and worn and I need to get a new set before they give up the ghost. I have a budget of £75 (£100 max). I used to have a set of Bose in-ear phones that I really liked, until the cord fell to bits and I tried to claim on the warranty. Only to find the set I had were fake. Turns out they were bought of ebay, doh...

Anyhow, I’m looking for some decent all-rounders that will sound just as good playing EBM to Metal to Indie to Classical. The ones I have been looking at so far:

Another set of the Bose in-ear (but real ones this time)
Shure e210
Etymotic ER6i
Or just some more Sony fontopia (as they are now available for only £17)

Nic and I had a big chat over the weekend. We sort of got on to the subject of engagement and we decided that, although we both want to go ahead, we aren't going to consider it for the next 6 months or so. It should give us a chance to settle in to the house (and living together). I think I am happy with that situation, I was seriously considering a ring purchase but I think I was letting my heart rule my head.

Whilst (still) clearing out my amassed cr@p from the loft; I came across my old cassette albums. Believe it or not it was mid 90's before I purchased anything on CD. Mainly because I used to listen to all my music on headphones whilst going to work etc and portable CD players were dreadful back then. I found myself getting very nostalgic and i've decided to slowly replace them with cd's. I've found most of them are available on eBay for £2-3 and the first batch turned up today (Soul Asylum - Let your dim light shine/grave dancers union and Moist - Silver) I'm really enjoying catching up with them, to be honest they aren’t as good as I remember them to be but I’m enjoying the nostalgia trip nonetheless.

I’ve also bought the new Metallica album (despite its advertised release date of tomorrow!) and the new release by Staind. The Metallica one is ok, certainly better than St Anger but I’m listening to it for the first time now so I will reserve judgement until i’ve had another couple of listens. I haven’t had chance to listen to the staind one yet. I did plan to sit and listen to them both last night but a 16 hour shift pretty much blew the chances of that out of the window....oh well at least it meant I only have to come in for 2 hours tomorrow.

Current Music: Soul Asylum - Nothing to write home about
Started moving a few bits into the house at the weekend, all the kitchen stuff is in (apart from the appliances that haven’t arrived yet). Once we had finished it started to feel more like a home and less of a shell, it was a bit of a reality check for me. I had a sort of "Oh my god this is actually going to happen" happy moment followed by a minor "Oh my god this is ACTUALLY going to happen" panic attack. Anyway I’m picking up the key finally tonight so I can start moving flat packed furniture in and get it built. I still need to buy a decent cable wireless router/firewall but the one I fancied seems to have some major flaws.

I just cant get myself motivated today, partly because it is Friday, partly because most of my workload is frustrating me at the moment (firewall upgrades and Windows update servers) and partly because I am so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. I'm supposed to be heading to the cinema tonight but I'm betting I sleep through the film :D

I'm looking forward to the weekend though, going out for a meal with Nic and a couple of friends to the Victoria (literally next to Cattal rail station) the food is fantastic there, a little pricey, but worth it.

Unfortunately I will be spending most of the day in the loft sorting through more crap (IBM Aptiva PII, 64mb of RAM anyone?)

5.30 is a god awful time of the morning - i had to get up and drag myself to York for 7.30 so that i could be here while some sparkies did circuit testing before fitting more sockets in our office. Only to find that when i got here they had already started and i probably wasn't needed anyway!!! Saying that i did try and move too much kit on to one circuit and tripped the fuse so all the servers had no mains while i sorted it out. Thank god for UPSes

At least i can go home early!

Current Mood: fuzzy!
No, contrary to popular belief I'm not actually dead! Busy times are afoot getting ready for the big house move...I can't wait...Unfortunately it means my social life is almost none existent and all of my cash is going on furniture but it will all be worth it in the long run.

I've also discovered the joys of freecycle as a way of getting rid of my 20 years of amassed cr@p i have stored in the loft. Although no-one seems to want my video collection (including me).

feeling a bit dazed after the weekend, i went to a barbecue on Saturday night and ended up so drunk my hangover lasted 2 days. At least that's how long it took me to sleep it off. I think i need to calm down a it! Unfortunately all that sleep meant i didn't sleep a wink last night so i feel rubbish again. Its hard work this socialising lark.

BTW: I'm still trying to flog that DJ kit i was trying to flog a few months back if anyone is interested, i need the cash for a certain diamond ring....eek (good job she never reads this)
